Gold Standard Phantoms CTO Dr Aaron Oliver-Taylor Awarded 2026 IPEM Gold Medal Award in Innovation

Gold Standard Phantoms CTO Dr Aaron Oliver-Taylor receives the 2026 IPEM Gold Medal Award in Innovation for his contributions to quantitative MRI calibration.
Gold Standard Phantoms (GSP) is delighted to announce that its co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, Dr Aaron Oliver-Taylor, has received the 2026 Gold Medal Award in Innovation from the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM), recognising his outstanding contributions to quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the development of innovative MRI calibration technologies. The prestigious IPEM Gold Medal Award in Innovation recognises individuals who have made sustained and outstanding contributions to innovation in physics and engineering applied to medicine and biology. Aaron's recognition highlights his technical leadership in developing technologies that improve the accuracy, reliability and reproducibility of MRI measurements, helping bridge the gap between scientific research, engineering innovation and clinical applications.
Advancing the Accuracy and Reliability of Quantitative MRI
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a powerful medical imaging technology that provides detailed anatomical images and, increasingly, quantitative measurements of tissue properties. However, differences between MRI scanners, imaging protocols and environmental conditions can introduce variability into these measurements, presenting challenges for clinical diagnosis, disease monitoring and multicentre research. For more than one and a half decades, Aaron has worked to address these challenges through the development of innovative MRI calibration technologies. Combining expertise in MRI physics, materials science and engineering, he has helped develop stable, traceable reference standards that enable MRI systems to be characterised and calibrated with greater confidence. As co-founder and CTO of Gold Standard Phantoms, Aaron has played a central role in translating these scientific advances into practical MRI calibration and quality assurance solutions for hospitals, research institutions and medical imaging professionals worldwide.
METRION: Pioneering Innovation in MRI Calibration
Among Aaron's notable innovations is METRION, Gold Standard Phantoms' co-patient MRI calibration platform, developed to improve the accuracy and reproducibility of quantitative MRI measurements during patient examinations. METRION combines precisely characterised reference materials, advanced temperature monitoring and calibration algorithms to address variability in quantitative imaging biomarkers, particularly the Apparent Diffusion Coefficient (ADC) used in diffusion-weighted MRI. ADC measurements provide information about water molecule diffusion within tissue and are increasingly important in quantitative imaging research, including cancer assessment and treatment monitoring. By enabling traceable calibration alongside patient imaging, METRION aims to make quantitative MRI measurements more comparable across scanners, clinical sites and time points. This approach has significant potential for applications including prostate cancer imaging, multicentre clinical trials and the development of AI-based medical imaging tools. The technology also forms part of GSP's wider research and innovation activities, including the PREDICT project, which focuses on improving prostate cancer imaging through calibrated MRI measurements.
IPEM Recognition of Sustained Innovation in Medical Physics
In recognising Aaron's achievements, IPEM highlighted his sustained technical leadership in quantitative MRI and his ability to translate complex scientific and engineering concepts into practical technologies that support more reliable medical imaging. Reflecting on receiving the award, Aaron said:
"To have this work recognised with the IPEM Gold Medal in Innovation is a huge honour. It is incredibly rewarding to see our efforts to bridge science, engineering, and clinical practice acknowledged by such a respected institution."
Aaron also acknowledged the contributions of the wider Gold Standard Phantoms team, whose expertise and collaboration have supported the development of these innovative technologies. The award reflects the importance of connecting fundamental scientific research with engineering solutions that can address longstanding challenges in healthcare.
Continuing Our Mission to Advance Quantitative MRI
This recognition marks an important milestone for Aaron and Gold Standard Phantoms, celebrating the years of research, engineering and collaboration behind technologies designed to make quantitative MRI more accurate and reproducible. As quantitative imaging becomes increasingly important to precision medicine, reliable and traceable MRI measurements will be essential to supporting greater consistency in clinical practice and research. At Gold Standard Phantoms, we remain committed to advancing MRI calibration, developing innovative reference standards and supporting clinicians, researchers and healthcare organisations worldwide.
We are immensely proud of Aaron's achievement and look forward to continuing our work towards more reliable quantitative MRI.
Congratulations, Aaron!
